Bokajan, located on the Assam -Nagaland border, was one the first towns in Assam to have witnessed industrialization and that happened when the Cement Corporation of Inida’s factory was commissioned here on the 1st of April 1977 in the central sector. Over the years, the town has grown but has not been abble to benefit fully the early industrialization it had seen.

Located in Karbi Anglong district, it boots of very beautiful scenic and natural beauty. It is accessible by road from Dimapur, the district Capital, from Golaghat and from Dimapur. It is also served by the railways with a station at Bokajan and a major junction at Dimapur which is only about 10 kms from the town. While the road connectivity is not that good, the rail connectivity is very good, with many trains having a stoppage here. So, it would be advisable to use travel to Bokajan by train rather than by road but it also serves as a good stop on the way from Golaghat to Dimapur via the beautiful Nambor forest.

The cement factory has been the anchor of the economic growth of the town and its surrounding areas. This has led to the town having a flourishing economy and rail connectivity. The factory is one of the only three factories of Cement Corporation of India which is functional and has always been one of its best performing factories, being able to show profits for most of the financial years.

The plant has a capacity of 1.98 Lakh MT and employs dry process to manufacture cement. It manufactures various types of cements like Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC), Portland Slag Cement (PSC) & Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) of varying grades viz 33, 43,53 and 53S. The 53s is a special grade cement and is used for the manufacture of sleepers for Indian Railways) grades. The ropeway system used by the plant to transport raw materials from its mine is quite a unique system for a new visitor to see and one which cannot be seen anywhere else in Assam.

Quite a few other industries and tea gardens have also come up in time but have not been able to archive much success.

The Namobor Forest is located about 40 kms from here and anyone wanting to enjoy the sights of the place, can halt at Bokajan, as a few good guests house are located here. The beautiful hot spring or gorompani located there can also be visited from here. Also, given the proximity to Dimapur, it would also help to visit the place and enjoy the beauty of Nagaland.

The town itself is a quite and peaceful town and gives one a nice and relaxing place to take the mind off the busy city life. The Colony of the factory is the biggest residential area of the town and has 200 quarters in the colony. It is a very beautiful township and is quite a comfortable to live in, with all amenities like bank, school present in it.

The only discomfort one would face in the town is the dust produced from the factory, while this has been considerably reduced in recent times but still vehicles parked outside tend to accumulate some dust if parked outside overnight but still can be get rid of with a nice wash.
